Abstract

Abstract. This study presents the result of an extensive laboratory model tests for dynamic deep compaction on a granular soil. The assembly consists of a cylindrical bucket containing the soil and a 6 Cm diameter tamper enhanced with different weights which is dropped from heights to give a range of energies scaled from the field. The soil compaction and bearing capacity have been evaluated both before and after the tests. The crater depth has also been measured. Results of experiments indicate no correlation between energy and bearing capacity if the height and weight are varied in a way to fix the energy. No correlation can also be found between momentum and bearing capacity if the weight and height are varied to give a fixed momentum. It has been found that the bearing capacity has a relatively good correlation with products of momentum and energy.
